Trailblazer in Action: Dr. Chris Wachira Receives Prestigious Entrepreneurial Award

We are thrilled to announce that Dr. Chris Wachira, our visionary winemaker and CEO, has been honored with the Entrepreneurial Women of Impact Award. This prestigious accolade, conferred through a collaboration between the Women Presidents Organization (WPO) and Women Elevating Women (W.E.W.), recognizes the extraordinary achievements and transformative impact of women of color entrepreneurs across North America.

Dr. Chris’s remarkable journey began in Kenya and brought her to the U.S., where she has made a significant mark in both healthcare and the wine industry. With nearly two decades of experience bridging the equity divide, Dr. Chris has shown an unwavering commitment to advancing minority equity and access. Her extensive clinical career, spanning over 15 years at Stanford Healthcare, was marked by substantial contributions to Neuroscience clinical outcomes. As a Global Health Strategist, she also served as Executive Director of the Institute for Clinical Excellence – Africa, focusing on improving global healthcare delivery.

In 2021, Dr. Chris transitioned from corporate healthcare to global health consulting and the leadership of The Wachira Group. Founded in 2016, this innovative organization comprises multiple verticals, including production, import & export, distribution, and direct-to-consumer operations. Wachira Wines, the first Kenyan-American winery in the U.S., emerged from Dr. Chris’s passion for science and her desire to pair fine Californian wines with Kenyan cuisine. Her wines have earned significant acclaim, including 33 medals from competitions across the U.S., such as double golds, silver, and bronze at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.

SOKO Distributors, another arm of The Wachira Group, is a Tier 1 supplier, WBENC & MBE certified, and the first Black-owned and woman-owned distributor, importer, and exporter of wine, beer, and liquor licensed in California. SOKO Distributors aims to disrupt the alcohol industry by increasing market share for high-quality, underrepresented producers. The company has served notable clients, including Delta Airlines and Total Wines & More, and is a contracted importer of Tusker Beer into the U.S. from East African Breweries Limited (EABL).

KARIBU by Wachira, the first Black-owned and woman-owned winery tasting room in Alameda County and the greater San Francisco Bay Area, offers a curated community-based experience. Located at 1419 Park Street, Alameda, CA 94501, KARIBU serves as the home of Wachira Wines and a selection of award-winning BIPOC, women-owned, and locally crafted small-batch wines. Our commitment to diversity and equity is evident in our community engagement programs, available Thursday through Sunday.

Dr. Chris’s recognition with the Entrepreneurial Women of Impact Award is a testament to her dedication to excellence and her ongoing efforts to drive inclusive change. We are incredibly proud of her achievements and excited to support her continued impact.
