Mac McDonald is a Black vintner who has been in the wine industry for over four decades. He began his journey in the industry by taking classes at Merritt Jr. College and UC Berkeley. After completing his education, he worked a variety of jobs until he crossed paths with Charlie Wagner of Rutherford’s Caymus Vineyards. This encounter would prove to be a turning point in his career, as he would later go on to launch Vision Cellars in 1995. Since its inception, Vision Cellars has received high ratings from critics and has even been served in the White House. McDonald’s wines have become highly sought after and he has become a legend in the industry. In addition to his success as a winemaker, McDonald has also made significant contributions to the industry as a whole. He co-founded the Association of African American Vintners, which aims to promote diversity and highlight Black winemakers in the industry. He has become a prominent figure in the industry, and his contributions have been widely recognized. As a mentor to emerging Black winemakers, McDonald has helped to pave the way for future generations of winemakers to succeed in an industry that has traditionally been dominated by white winemakers.
