Breaking Barriers: Women of color thriving in the Business World

Women of color are making remarkable strides in the field of entrepreneurship in the United States. As the fastest-growing group of entrepreneurs, their impact is significant. However, despite their impressive numbers, many still face formidable barriers to entry, including lack of funding and discrimination. Maria Vasco, the founder of Uvida, is a prime example of an entrepreneur who has had to battle negativity and remain focused on her vision. One of the most daunting challenges facing women of color entrepreneurs is the low survival rate of their businesses. Only 3% of Black women run companies that last longer than five years, highlighting the need for equity in funding and opportunities. This sobering statistic underscores the tremendous work that still needs to be done to level the playing field and create an environment that supports the growth and sustainability of businesses owned by women of color. Despite these challenges, many women of color are succeeding in entrepreneurship and carving out their own paths to success. Basic Black, a publication that focuses on issues affecting Black communities, recently highlighted the experiences and advice of three successful women entrepreneurs. These women emphasized the importance of support networks, mentors, and perseverance in overcoming obstacles and achieving success.
